Session 5 Summary: Stop Doing It All Yourself
Session 5 addressed a fundamental reason that keeps Scouting units from being sustainable: leaders who find it hard to share leadership, responsibility, and ownership of the unit’s program.
Units often revolve around one or two key people. Dedicated leaders are a great strength for a unit. They matter. They know how to get things done. They’re competent. The challenge is that competence solves today’s problems without necessarily developing tomorrow’s leaders.
When leaders realize that they’re carrying too much, the usual solution is delegation. Delegation can create opportunities for more people to become involved in the program. But delegation doesn’t solve the deeper problem.
Delegation changes who performs the work. Ownership changes who is responsible for the outcome. Those are not the same thing.
Ownership develops gradually as confidence and responsibility grow. Growth requires three things: trust, guidance, and coaching. Together, they create an environment where ownership grows.
Ownership can be challenging for the leader who is sharing it. The leader has to hold their responsibilities loosely enough to let others grow into ownership. Ownership can’t grow in a space where every decision remains attached to the original leader.
Session 5’s homework tool is the Responsibility Map. Like exercises in the prior sessions, the goal is not to solve everything at once. Instead, the goal is to identify one meaningful responsibility and take one step toward creating shared ownership. The Responsibility Map brings into the open which one responsibility depends on one person, creating a vulnerability.
Ownership development never ends. Experienced leaders move on. During committee meetings, talk about where your unit depends too heavily on too few people. Leadership development becomes intentional rather than accidental. These conversations must be handled with care and confidentiality. Ownership grows through relationships and relationships require trust.
We look forward to seeing you during the next session on 9/8/26 at 7 PM CDT. We’ll talk about why the first 90 days of a family’s relationship with a unit is critical.
